Present & Past Tense Examples

Present(현재)  tense:

아,오verb ending +아요.       어,우,으,이verb ending +어요.         여(하) verb ending +해요.

Past(과거) Tense

아, 오verb ending +았어요.              어,우,으,이verb ending +었어요.                 여(하)verb ending +했어요.

~게 & ~히

~게 (Adverbial form)

Korean verbs can take the adverbative ending ~게 and function adverbially.  However, note that when a verb a verb takes the ending in ~게, it is still not completely a drived adverb. Rather, it function as an adverb while retaining most of its verbal qualities.  Thus, these forms are simply cases of the ending ~게, attaching to the stems of basic verb froms in the lexicon.  This ending is highly productive and is compatible with nearly all descriptive verbs.

e.g.

크다-크게                                        나쁘다-나쁘게

따뜻하다-따뜻하게                        놀랍다-놀랍게

예쁘다-예쁘게                                사랑스럽다-사랑스럽게

찰스씨가 교실에서 크게 웃었어요.

나쁘게 생각하지 마세요.

감기에 걸려서 몸을 따뜻하게 해야해요.

찰스씨는 한국사람이 아니지만 놀랍게 한국말을 잘 해요.

예쁘게 앉으세요.

나오미하고 에리키가 사랑스럽게 놀아요.

~히(adverbial suffix)

This adverbial suffix attaches to descriptive Sino-Korean roots which can take~하다. The 하다 is replaced by ~히 to derive the adverb. This particular suffix is highly productive.

안녕히(peacefully-안녕하다), 충분히(sufficiently-충분하다), 상당히(considerably-상당하다), 급히(urgently-급하다)

안녕히 가세요.

충분히 이해해요.

상당히 비싸네요.

선생님이 급히 집에 가야 해요.

Similarly ~히 can attach to pure Korean descriptive roots which combine with ~하다 to form derived adverbs.

부지런하다(diligent)                      부지런히 어디에 가세요?

천천하다(slow)                              천천히 말씀해 주세요.

가득하다(full)                                포도를 상자에 가득히 담아 주세요.

꼼꼼하다(meticulous)                    꼼꼼히 읽고 대답해 주세요.

공손하다(respectful)                      공손히 인사하세요.

조용하다                                       조용히 걸으세요.
